All workshops are independent of one another. Each workshop lasts for 2.5 hours. Choice of morning or evening sessions.
Synopsis of Workshops
Introduction to Caregiving Journey and Resources
Caregiving is a journey with twists and turns along the way. Circumstance Change. Care needs change. Options for care change.
The workshop will provide guidance and information to participants about the role as caregiver, the different stages of caregiving, signs and indicators that loved ones may need help, tips on caregiving and the resources available to support the caregiver.
At the end of the workshop, participants will know how to develop an appropriate care plan to determine the extent and type of care assistance the care-recipient may require.
Communication Strategies for Improved Relationship in Caregiving
Inability to communicate is one of the most common causes of caregiver frustration and care recipient agitation. Being able to talk to, and understanding the care-recipient is absolutely essential in caregiving.
Participants will learn how to understand what the care-recipient is trying to say, by providing the role of non-verbal communication, active listening for enhanced communication and the giving and receiving of feedback.
At the end of the workshop, participants will know how to make it easier for care-recipient to understand them by changing how they speak, such as simple words and sentences, speak clearly and slowly.
All you need to know about Depression and Caregiving (Coping with Depression for Caregivers)
It is not unusual for caregivers to develop mild or more serious depression due to the constant demands they face in providing care. Depression is a treatable disorder.
Participants will learn to understand depression (major depressive disorder), identify depression warning signs, the different types of depression, depression treatments, where to get help for depression, how to help yourself or someone in your life who is depressed.
At the end of the workshop, participants will know how to manage depression with positive energy and/or help their care-recipients to cope with depression.
All you need to know about Grief and Caregiving (Coping with Grief for Caregivers)
Losing someone you love deeply is very painful. You may experience all kinds of difficult emotions and it may feel like sadness and pain you are experiencing and will never let up. While there are no right or wrong way to grief, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain.
Participants will learn the five stages of grief, common symptoms of grief, the effect of the loss of independence and security, impaired abilities, truncated visions of the future, and strategies to help you come to terms with the loss.
At the end of the workshop, participants will know how to cope with grief and loss and to move on with their life.
Stress Management Strategies for Caregivers
Participants will be provided with an overview of stress, so as to understand the common sources of stress faced by caregiver and care-recipient. At the workshop, through small group discussions and role plays, participants will learn to better identify signs and symptoms of stress, how to manage stress, techniques for dealing with stress and provided with useful resources. The stress management skills will empower participants to deal with stress and/or help their care-recipients to cope with stress.
Practicing Empathy in Caregiving
Participants will be provided with an overview of empathy, so as to understand the importance and benefits of practising empathy in caregiving. Through small group discussions and activities, participants will learn key elements of empathy, how to nurture empathy within oneself, how to accept others and learn to apply practical skills in demonstrating empathy. The empathy skills will empower participants to enhance their relationship with their care recipients.
Practical Skills for Caregivers to Improve Well-being
This workshop is designed to guide caregivers to identify the sources of stress, which affect their well-being both at work and at home. Psychosocial and emotional factors are discussed and through exercises and discussion participants are encouraged to be conscious of their feelings and sense of caregiving burden (objective and subjective). Strategies and practical techniques to improve their well-being are taught, through demonstrations and visual mode. Peer sharing and learning is used to encourage participants to learn from each other. Here is learn more about our caregiver support services.
